Peptan collagen peptide has dairy product options

Collagen peptides are finding their way into more and more dairy products, as they satisfy both the clean label and functional dairy trends, according to Dutch ingredient manufacturer Rousselot.

The company manufactures Peptan, which the company says can be used by food and beverage manufacturers as an ingredient in a variety of dairy products, including yogurts, cream cheese, beverages and powdered drinks.

A hydrolyzed form of collagen, collagen peptides are continuing to rise in popularity across the global food and nutrition market, due to their range of health benefits and functional properties, Rousselot said.

Health benefits

The company points to two recently published studies on collagen in the Journal Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition and PLOS One that connect collagen consumption with bone and joint health.

Rousselot says Peptan, which has a neutral taste and odor, provides health benefits that include healthy aging, joint and bone health, skin care, and sports nutrition.

The Peptan range is split into three product lines, with collagen from porcine, bovine or fish sources.

Move towards functional foods

Mal Nygaard, global director Peptan, told DairyReporter what is unique about Peptan is it is one active ingredient that can give multiple benefits with a daily dosage of 5-10g.

“It’s very easy to integrate into different products,” Nygaard said.

“Consumers understand collagen is something that you lose with age, and by boosting and having active collagen peptides in your functional food or dairy can help you maintain healthy tissue, feel good and look good.”

She said people are moving from traditional supplements into functional foods such as beverages, dairy products and bars.

“It resonates with the current consumer trends.”

Rousselot showcased Peptan, among other products, at Vitafoods in Switzerland, in May, and will be further promoting its use in functional food, drinks and nutritional applications at IFT in Las Vegas later this month.
